BOY’S BASKETBALL

Sydney West Champions 2 years in a row.

St marys/Mt Druitt boys played some amazing basketball yesterday, ending the day undefeated champions. This included clawing back an 11-2 deficit following an 8-0 run from our opponents early in the final, to end up taking the lead with only minutes left in the game.
Each and every one of the boys carried themselves in a way that was an absolute credit to your schools. There was some disappointing behaviour on display from some of the other districts but all 10 of your St Marys/Mount Druitt boys really displayed just exemplary sportsmanship all day. They really do deserve a serious pat on the back. They were a wonderful group to look after and I could not have asked for any more from any of them.
We had three players also make the Sydney West team. Our captain Mason, and also Louis  and Caleb. All three thoroughly deserved their spots and left the selector no choice but to pick them.
Please congratulate them all when they return to your schools.

GIRL’S BASKETBALL

On Tuesday the 26th of March, the Combined Districts Girls Basketball team competed at the Sydney West Basketball Tournament.

The fast-paced nature of the gala day might have shocked the girls during our opening game, as we found ourselves down 11-4 at the half. The girls found their feet in the second half, managing to tie the game 17-17 with about a minute and a half to go. Unfortunately, the comeback wasn’t meant to be, and the girls lost by 3.

The following group games saw the girls play relentless defence, chasing down every loose ball, fighting for rebounds and shutting down other teams’ key players. Their hard work paid off as the team finished second in our pool, booking a spot in the semi-finals.

In our semi-final, the girls started where they left off and grinded out a 6-0 lead, playing great offense and even better defence. Penrith clawed their way back into the game and we found ourselves down 7-6 at halftime. Tired legs and fatigue from all the hustle and defence throughout the day caught up to the girls and Penrith ran away with it in the second half. The girls should hold their heads up high knowing they pushed the eventual champions all the way to the end.

A bittersweet end to what was a terrific day of basketball. All the girls are to be commended for their efforts not only on the day of the tournament, but their effort and dedication during training sessions. The hard work they put it certainly paid off.

A special congratulations to India (Ropes Crossing PS)  and Julia  (Banks PS), who were selected to the Sydney West Girls Basketball Team. We wish them the best of luck at their tournament later in the year. Thank you to the parents of all our athletes for taking the time out of their days to transport their kids to training sessions and the tournament. Your support is appreciated.
